Meet the Team – Q&A with Giliker Flynn Director Chris Flynn

Here is an extract from an interview with Giliker Flynn Director and Wealth Planner Chris Flynn, where he discusses running a business with his wife, becoming a father for the second time, his interests and biggest inspiration.

Tell us about yourself?

My name is Chris Flynn, I’m 31, live in Stockton Brook with my wife Fran, daughter Norah who is my absolute world, and dog Percy. I run an independent financial advice business in Newcastle under Lyme called Giliker Flynn Independent Wealth Ltd.

Give Us an Insight into Your Career So Far?

I went to night school when I was 21 to study to become a Financial Adviser. I landed a job at Lloyds Bank soon after and worked there for five years. I grew frustrated and decided to set up my own business with my wife in 2015. We acquired another business in 2017 which has allowed us to grow significantly.

What’s the best part of your job?

Without doubt it’s when I’m sat down with clients, discussing their aims and objectives and providing financial advice. I genuinely enjoy talking to people about their lives.

What do you get up to you in your spare time?

I don’t get too much of it these days as I’m always busy entertaining Norah, but I wouldn’t change it as I love her so much. I also enjoy walking Percy as it helps me to switch off and relax. If I can find a spare few hours, I love to play golf or watch football on the TV.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

I wouldn’t want to live too far away from Stockton Brook. We have so much beautiful countryside around us including a golf course and a great mix of pubs and restaurants.
However if it’s affordable in future I would like to have a holiday home abroad, somewhere like Vale do Lobo in the Algarve.

Tell us your greatest achievement to date?

Business-wise, earning a living from doing something I enjoy.
My best specific achievement would be being voted one of the Vouchedfor UK top-rated financial advisers for 2019 in The Times.

Who’s your biggest inspiration and why?

I lost my dad when I was 15 but he and my mum played a massive role in shaping me.
I would say my biggest influence is my wife Fran. I met her at 19 and we have very similar aims and ambitions. I’m also very grateful for everyone else who has helped me.

If you had the choice, who would you take to dinner and why?

If I had to choose one, I’d take Sir Alex Ferguson for a curry at the Spice Exchange in Milton. I’m sure he has lots of great stories from his time at Manchester United.

Do you have a motto you work and live by?

I have two. The most important one is ‘try and enjoy every day’ and, secondly, ‘if you’re going to do something, do it to the best of your ability.’

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Me and Fran have another daughter on the way in August and I can’t wait! I’m also looking forward to continuing with growing my business and hope to bring a new financial adviser on board by the end of the year.
